How long does it take to get AER help?
For the quickest response, turn in the completed application, bring all
supporting documents, and ensure that your Commander/First Sergeant has
signed block #19 in DA form 1103 and all Commander Referral cases.
Does AER get its money from the government?
NO. AER does not receive any appropriated or non appropriated government money
What portion of my contribution goes to help soldiers?
95 cents of every dollar you contribute goes to help soldiers; AER administrative
expenses cost only 5 cents.
What is AER's record of assistance?
Since it was established in 1942, AER has helped more than 2.9 million Army
people with more than $882 million in financial assistance.
In 2003, AER assisted 53,865 Army people with more than $41 million, specifically:
$29 million to active duty soldiers and their families
$3.9 million to retired soldiers and their families
$1.3 million to widow(ers) and orphans of deceased soldiers
$3.6 million to soldiers dependent children and spouses education
How do I find AER when I need help?
AER's reciprocal agreements with the AIR Force Aid Society, Coast Guard Mutual
Assistance, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and the American Red Cross,
and the ability to transmit funds through the Department of State to soldiers
in remote areas, allow soldiers and their dependents access to emergency
financial assistance from AER through those organizations when an AER section
is not conveniently available. AER Assistance is available for you at more
than 1,800 locations around the world.
All financial assistance provided by these organizations to soldiers is funded
by AER.
- First, see your unit commander
- Then, go to your AER Section
If there is no AER Section, go to any of the following:
- American Red Cross Chapter
- Air Force Aid Society Section
- Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Auxiliary
- Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Office
Why does AER provide funds for widows and education scholarships?
In 1976, AER merged with the former Army Relief Society (ARS) whose mission
was to assist widows and provide scholarships for dependent children.
Through careful management of ARS' funds since the merger, AER is able to
continue these worthy programs today.
Why does AER have a fund raising campaign?
AER is a private organization that obtains all its funds through
donations. Fort Bragg campaign starts 1 March and goes on until 15 May.
The goal is to obtain $450,000 in donations. During 2006 Fort Bragg AER
gave out $2,961,343.29, of which $1,208,499.01 was through Commanders
Referral Program.

AER Interest-Free Loans or Grants AER can help
active duty soldiers and their dependents, ARNG and USAR soldiers on
active duty for more than 30 days and their dependents, retirees and
their dependents, and surviving spouses and orphans of soldiers who
died while on active duty or after they retired.
Necessary Documents
Step 1: Complete DA Form 1103,
"Application for AER Financial Assistance". Active duty personnel must
have the Commander or 1SG's review the completed application, and sign
block #17 for AER assistance, and block #19 for Commanders Referral
loan. In case of deployment, the rear detachment Commander signature is
accepted with appointment orders. Please do not stamp--a signature is
necessary.
Step 2: Complete a financial planning worksheet.
Step 3: Documents needed:
- Original/copy of most recent Leave and Earning Statement (LES): https://mypay.dfas.mil/mypay.aspx
- Spouse's most recent pay voucher (if applicable) and
- Leave/PCS orders
- Substantiating documents (car repair estimate, rental agreement, utility bill, etc.)
